International agreement signed in 1947 on tariffs and international trade. Its purpose was to promote trade freedom and multilateralism in commercial exchanges, in order to promote an increase in the standard of living, employment, and production. It was succeeded by the Uruguay Round and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
